Various music styles benefit concerts to end homelessness

I attended the ‘Home Sweet Home’ Benefit concerts on Friday 20th January 2017 at Sin é pub, Dublin 1 (Ireland) to raise funds for homeless people in Ireland.

Apart from contributing to a wonderful cause, I enjoyed discovering new bands and singers-songwriters 🤓!

The event is organised over 2 nights: Friday 20th and Saturday 21st January 2017 and has a different line-up constituting of 4 bands and/or singers-songwriters for each night. So, if you haven’t been to the first session, it’s still time to catch up the second one ✌️😉!

You will find the eventbrite online ticket link directly in the event’s description or you may pay at the door!

https://www.facebook.com/events/162589350888333/

Now, here is the moment you’ve all been waiting for 🎊, the live videos I took at the event 👏💝🎉! Apologises for the format, I should have filmed in landscape mode! Also, I haven’t filmed the last folk band ‘The Eskies’ as I ran out of battery. I’m sorry for this inconvenience. You will find the Facebook fan page link for each band/singer in the description under each YouTube video. To view the description, click on the YouTube title to open the video in a new tab. Enjoy! Tell us what’s your favourite act amongst them and why! If you have filmed them, too, feel free to share the link in the ‘comment’ box!

Music Without Borders – live concerts (2016)

First of all, before I start talking about the event I attended and sharing with you videos, I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas ⛄️❄️!

800px-merry_christmas_card

The charity event in aid of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) took place on Friday 23rd December 2016 at the beautiful and cozy Workman’s Club pub in Dublin (Ireland) 🔥. There was a fun and warm filled atmosphere to it and the live concerts were very good!

If you’d like to know more about the event itself, check their event page.

https://www.facebook.com/events/653950094771897/

You will find Facebook and Periscope live videos on my fan page:

https://www.facebook.com/Fundraising.Music/?fref=ts

The music was varied. It started off with what I would call ‘ambiant music’ with Daniel McDermott playing at the keyboard and using other pre-recorded instrumental pieces. It continued on with a brand new Irish hip hop duet called ‘God Creative and Crimes Against’ and finished off with a folk and pop music band led by Conor O’Mally. Entry tickets and Conor O’Meally music CDs purchased by the audience went into the fundraising initiative for the charitable organisation.

Now, I’m sure you are dying to watch the Youtube videos, right 😜😉?! Here you go!

Did you enjoy these? Have you been to the event and want to share your own videos and pictures? If so, add them in the ‘Comment’ box below!

‘Digga Is a dancer’ HipHop/Rap freestyle singing battles in Hamburg (Germany)

Here is an event I attended at Molotow bar, Nobistor 14 – Reeperbahn, Hamburg on 31st July 2015. I didn’t really know too much what to expect and ended up watching German hip hop freestyle singing battles. I have filmed two of them (one solo and a duet), that felt were the most interesting ones and had the best singing flows. Both are on different beats and styles, so you may like one more than the other depending on your taste!

You can find this event organisation on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/diggaisadancer

Please find in the below slideshow the line-up for the event and a picture for the duet I filmed.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I hope you will enjoy watching these two videos, now!

2009 ‘B-Girl’ US film free viewing on YouTube!

Although this may not be the most popular film and reviews are quite mixed, I must say it is an enjoyable, inspiring and empowering film to watch for aspiring b-girls and female rappers!

B-Girl is a 2009 dance film written and directed by Emily Dell and starring Julie Urich, Missy Yager, Wesley Jonathan, Drew Sidora, Aimee Garcia, James Martinez and based on director Emily Dell’s 2004 short film of the same name.

b-girl film main character Julie Urich acting as 'Angel'

The story goes as follows. In Brooklyn, Angel is a break dancer who lives with her mother Gabby. Her abusive boyfriend Hector won’t accept that she wants to break up. One night Angel and her best friend Rosie trade hats and jackets and Hector fatally stabs Rosie thinking she is Angel. When he realizes his mistake he stabs Angel too. Rosy dies and Angel is heavily injured. After many weeks of recovery, Angel wants to break dance again but is having difficulty. Gabby moves with Angel to Los Angeles to live with Angel’s grandmother, where she believes Angel will be safe. Angel gets a night job at a car rental company and goes to college during the day. She also joins a group of break dancers who need a sixth member to compete. An outsider in this male-dominated world, she has to claim her place in the circle, first by performing a lyrical rap poem at a huge break competition and then by competing at the same competition in an amazing display of dance artistry and skill.

You can watch it on YouTube (see below free viewing video). You may also order it as a DVD or buy film merchandise on the following online shop: http://bgirlmovie.bigcartel.com/

If interested, you can read this interview with the main female character Julie ‘Jules’ Urich:

Finally, if you like the film soundtrack, you can listen to it with the music player integrated in the previously mentioned online shop home page and search on YouTube for songs. Since they aren’t all that commercial you may not find everything on YouTube, though!

For those who haven’t watched the City of Men series and film (called Cidade dos Homens in Brazilian), I highly recommend you to do so. The story follows two characters from early teenage hood to adulthood and can be purchased on ebay or amazon.

Tanzania – Bongo Flava music artists

Tanzanian music is known for its Bongo Flava style. Do you know what Bongo Flava is about and how it influences this East African country’s musical heritage?

Bongo Flava is best described as Swahili hip-hop fusion.

The word ‘bongo’ means ‘brains’ in Swahili, referring to the need of being street smart in a city like Dar es Salaam in order to survive. ‘Bongo’ became a synonym for Dar es Salaam, but at present it can also refer to the entire country. ‘Flava’ is a Swahilisation of ‘flavour’, thus bongo flava is ‘the flavour of Tanzania’.

Bongo flava has evolved since its beginnings and encompassed many musical styles, such as zouk, reggae, afrobeat and hip-hop. Bongo flava is primarily associated with Tanzanian youth. At present, bongo flava is a genre on its own, it is seen as a different music than hip-hop.

Enjoy the below Tanzinian music artists’ videos and soundtrack:

– Ali Kiba, a candy zouk singer:

– Béatrice Nabisha, a Bongo Zouk singer (click on the link below):

South Africa – Hip Hop artists

Ever wondered how South African Hip Hop music could sound like ? If you have never been to South Africa, this will give a delightful musical trip!

I have discovered some really cool hip hop artists true to their origins, who have mixed the hip hop music with more fascinating local sounds like Kwaito (variant of house music featuring the use of African sounds and samples. Typically at a slower tempo range than other styles of house music, Kwaito often contains catchy melodic and percussive loop samples, deep bass lines, and vocals) or Zulu (guitar picking folklore music style influenced by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century).

For more information on Kwaito, check out this article:

http://thisisafrica.me/lifestyle/real-roots-kwaito-south-african-house-music/

I hope you will enjoy as much I did to listen to Terror MC, Pro Kid, Mzekezeke and Zulu boy.

If you want to know a bit more about these artists, check out their biographies here and find few videos below these links:

If you know any other original South African Hip Hop artists, share their tracks with us in the comment box below!
