Prince: Sign o’the Times live concert and DJ set

I hope you have celebrated well new year’s eve 🍾🎉! I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous new year 2017 😘🍀🌟🎊!

new-year-2017For my part, I decided to celebrate new year’s eve a little bit in advance 😂! I went to this tribute to Prince with DJ Al Murphy playing lots of Prince’s tunes and then watched the live recording of his 1987 Sign o’ the Times tour on Friday 30th December 2016 at The Sugar Club, Dublin (Ireland).

You can find more information about it in this  event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/228456610900746/

Here are recordings in picture and audio of the DJ’s act.

Now, I’d like to share with you some videos taken at the event. I would like to apologise if the last video’s soundtrack isn’t from Prince! I experienced few technical issues trying to publish a live YouTube video and it ended up recording the visuals without the sound 🤔😤!  So I picked a nice song in a similar style to add to the video 🙂😉. Anyway, I hope you will enjoy them!

How to become a technically good singer

How to become a technically good singer

As I usually like discovering new music, dance styles and techniques in video formats, I came across some really interesting videos about vocal techniques and how to use your voice effectively to sing better, while sparing your voice.

So, for those who aren’t familiar with vocal techniques and notes, I’d recommend you to start reading this article in wikipedia. This will give you a better understanding of what will be talked about later on in this blog post.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocal_range

As you may know, some singers are able to sing higher notes or even have a whistle register, yet they may use improper vocal techniques resulting in voice damages over time. This, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t good singers any longer, but that they can’t hit the same notes they used to. With better practice they may recover part of their register, though. Here are few examples of singers who damaged their voice :

Now let’s move to what are considered good or bad techniques. A bad technique can be summarised by a lack of singing warming-up and over-pushing some of the notes. Good singers using good techniques usually follow healthy lifestyles and have a dedicated vocal coach to train their voices for performances or studio recordings. Here, in this video, Céline Dion talks about vocal warming-up and compare it to the way dancers warm-up their bodies before performances:

Now, here is a video that shows you what is bad or good technique. If you aren’t willing to listen to their sales pitch (lol), fast-forward to 1.09 minute:

A little bit more of technicalities of voice placement and tone/timber:

Now let’s move to the actual lessons! Ready? These are obviously basics to start with but you’ll find more videos like this from this gentleman if you subscribe to his YouTube channel:

Finally, for a bit of fun, you may want to check what kind of vocal range and abilities famous singers have on this website:

Eclectic DJ and reggae band at Favela Chic Paris (2016)

This was a rather unplanned night out I went for on Wednesday 25th May 2016. Had dinner across the street and was attracted to this bar and restaurant. So, I came in and must say this was a great idea!

reggae

This ‘Favela Chic’ club isn’t only playing – as the name suggests – Brazilian sounds, but a great variety of world music.

Here are few pictures of the venue, which I thought is quite rather original:

The main focus for this night was on DJ Arthur Chap. If you want to know more about him, check this link:

There was also a guest reggae band. Unfortunately, the band name is unknown to me.

Here are few videos taken at the event of both DJ and band performances:

Angola – Kuduro music and dance

I just discovered some real cool dance performances and dug deeper to find out more about this dance style.

Kuduro

Kuduro (or kuduru) is a type of music and dance originally developed in Angola in the 1980s. It is characterized as uptempo, energetic, and danceable. Kuduro began in Luanda, Angola in the late 1980s. Initially, producers sampled traditional carnival music like soca and zouk from the Caribbean, as well as semba from Angola and laid this around a fast 4/4 beat.

The kuduro is similar to the Kizomba rhythm. The lyrics are usually in Portuguese.

For those of you who like urban dances, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy this kuduro dance, too! I can find a lot similarities between new style hip hop, house and kuduro.

If you’d like to know more about it, check out this article (video of urban dances including kuduro in it):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuduro

For those interested in learning this dance, there are classes in Paris (France) and London (England):

Every Tuesday with Iris De Brito from 19:30 to 20:30 known for her afro, for her Kizomba and Semba and general high energy, this is one class that will make you move!

@ The Space Studios/ 31 Falkirk St London N1 6HQ

Every Monday from 20:00 to 21:00 with Nat Borges (NKM) known for his afro-hous and kuduro energy! He is one of the dancer from the video i’m sharing with you later in this post :).

@Studio Bleu/ 32 rue du Capitaine Marchal, 75020 Paris (porte de Bagnolet- metro Gambetta)

Now, let me share with you a youtube video mix gathering both music kuduro videos and dance videos. The first video is the one I came across at first and enjoyed watching. The choreography is very good and the two dancers are also witty/funny!

What do you think of this music? And what about the dance?
